About the rule
What it is
Controlled unclassified information (CUI) is government information that law, regulation or government-wide policy requires to be safeguarded or disseminated only in controlled ways, even though it is not classified. The CUI Program was set up by Executive Order 13556 and is implemented by 32 CFR Part 2002, issued by the National Archives as the program’s Executive Agent; the Department of Defense implements it through DoD Instruction 5200.48. Non-federal organizations that hold CUI for the government generally protect it using NIST SP 800-171.
