About the rule
What it is
The Freedom of Information Act (5 U.S.C. 552) gives any person the right to request records from federal executive branch agencies, which must release them unless an exemption or exclusion in the Act applies. The Department of Justice’s Office of Information Policy oversees how agencies comply. FOIA does not cover state and local governments, which have their own public records laws.
