About the rule
What it is
NIST Special Publication 800-88, Guidelines for Media Sanitization, helps organizations decide how to sanitize storage media, by clearing, purging or destroying it, so that data cannot be recovered when the media is reused or disposed of. It is published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Revision 2 replaced Revision 1 in September 2025.
