About the rule
What it is
The Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (E-SIGN), a federal law enacted in 2000, gives electronic signatures, contracts and records in interstate and foreign commerce the same legal effect as paper ones. Where a law requires information to be given to a consumer in writing, it may be given electronically only after the consumer consents in the way the Act sets out.
