Infection Control & Contact Tracing

Know who shared a room, a unit or a shift with an infectious case, and act on it

Overview

What you are buying

Infection Control & Contact Tracing reconstructs where patients and staff were inside your facility from admission, transfer and bed data, care team assignments and, where you have one, your real-time location system. When a case is confirmed, your infection preventionists see the people who may have been exposed, decide who needs follow-up, and track isolation, testing and employee health actions to completion. During an outbreak the same records show how cases are connected across units and time.

The problem it solves

When a patient tests positive for a transmissible infection, infection preventionists have to work out who shared the room, the unit, the equipment and the staff. That means pulling bed histories from the EHR, asking managers for staffing sheets, and building exposure lists in spreadsheets, often days after the exposure. Employee health works from a separate list, follow-up testing is tracked by hand, and when an outbreak spans several units it is hard to see how cases connect or to show the health department what was done.

  • Bed histories and staffing records are pulled by hand from several systems
  • Exposure lists are built in spreadsheets and differ between infection prevention and employee health
  • Follow-up testing, isolation and work restrictions are tracked separately
  • Outbreak timelines are hard to assemble for leadership and the health department

Who uses it

  • Infection preventionists and hospital epidemiologists
  • Employee and occupational health teams who follow up exposed staff
  • Nurse managers and unit leaders who act on isolation and cohorting decisions
  • Quality and patient safety leaders who report healthcare-associated infections
  • Emergency management teams who coordinate outbreak response

A short walkthrough

Illustrative screens with fictional sample data. They show the workflow, not any client’s data or configuration, and the layout of the product itself differs. A live demonstration uses the product with sample data.

  1. Step 1

    A new case

A positive result on the watch list opens an index case with the patient's location and isolation status.

    Next steps

    • Confirm the case meets your criteria
    • Review the location history for the window
    • Review proposed contacts
A positive result on the watch list opens an index case with the patient's location and isolation status.
  2. Step 2

    Where the patient was

The location history shows every room and unit in the exposure window, assembled from admission and transfer data.

  3. Step 3

    Proposed contacts

Patients and staff who overlapped with the case are listed with the type and length of contact, for the infection preventionist to decide.

Workflows

The principal workflows

  1. Detect

Positive results for organisms and conditions you choose arrive from your laboratory system and open an index case for an infection preventionist to review.

    • Laboratory results for the organisms on your watch list arrive by HL7 interface
    • An index case is opened with the patient's admission and isolation status
    • Infection preventionist confirms the case meets your criteria or closes it
    • Exposure window is set from your organism-specific rules and adjusted where needed
    • Notifiable conditions are flagged for reporting to the health department
  2. Trace

For the exposure window, the product lists the patients who shared a room or unit with the case and the staff assigned to them, using bed movements, care team assignments and location data where available.

    • Bed and unit history assembled from admission, discharge and transfer messages
    • Care team assignments and staff schedules matched to the case's locations
    • Real-time location data added where your facility has it
    • Each possible contact listed with the type and length of overlap
    • Infection preventionist reviews the list and marks who is considered exposed
  3. Follow up

Exposed patients go to their units for isolation or testing actions, and exposed staff go to employee health, with each action tracked to completion.

    • Patient follow-up tasks sent to the responsible unit and clinician
    • Staff exposures sent to employee health, with only the information they need
    • Testing, isolation, prophylaxis and work restriction decisions recorded
    • Results and outcomes recorded against each contact
    • Open follow-ups listed until each is closed
  4. Manage outbreaks

When cases are linked, they are grouped into an outbreak with a timeline, a unit map and a record of control measures, ready for leadership and the health department.

    • Infection preventionist links related cases into an outbreak
    • Epidemic curve and unit timeline show where and when cases occurred
    • Control measures such as cohorting, closure to admissions and enhanced cleaning recorded
    • Line list prepared for the health department and released by your staff
    • Outbreak closed with a summary when your criteria are met

How access is controlled

  • Employee health records are kept apart from patient records: infection preventionists see that a staff member was exposed and followed up, and unit managers see only whether a staff member is cleared to work.
  • The product proposes contacts; people decide. Every exposure decision, adjusted window and outbreak declaration is recorded with who made it and why.
  • Roles are configured with you during implementation. You can rename them, add custom roles and limit unit managers to their own units, and every permission change is recorded in the audit trail.
  • Staff sign in through your identity provider, and roles can follow its groups. Surveyors and health department reviewers get temporary read-only access with a defined scope and an end date.

Exports, access and evidence

  • Every report can be exported to CSV, and summary and evidence reports to PDF. Reports can be scheduled to arrive by email for the people entitled to see them.
  • Filters can be saved, so infection preventionists, unit managers and employee health each keep their own views.
  • Case, contact and outbreak data is available through the Moraph Work API for reporting alongside your other quality data.
  • Reports respect each viewer's role: unit managers see their units, employee health reports carry no patient detail, and patient reports carry no staff health detail.
  • Reports for external use are released only after the approval your policy requires, and running and exporting any report is recorded in the audit trail.

Deployment

Where and how it runs

Moraph cloud

Hosted and operated by Moraph in the United States region, with interfaces to your laboratory, EHR and staffing systems.

Dedicated environment

A single-tenant environment for health systems whose policies require isolation, scoped in the proposal.

Health system deployment

One deployment across several facilities, so staff and patients who move between them can be traced, with each facility's team seeing its own work.

Security controls, independent audits and data residency are set out in our Trust Center. Engagement models and what drives a quotation are on Working with Moraph.

Implementation

What a rollout involves

The general phases are on Working with Moraph. For this product, they involve the following.

Data sources

We connect your laboratory, admission and transfer, and staffing data, and real-time location data where you have it. We need contacts from each system's team.

Unit and room mapping

Units, rooms and beds are mapped so locations from different systems line up, including shared spaces your team wants traced.

Organism rules

Watch lists, exposure windows, contact definitions and follow-up actions are configured with your infection prevention team and approved by your hospital epidemiologist.

Employee health workflow

Staff exposure handoff and work status sharing are set up with employee health, either in the product or with your existing system.

Retrospective testing

Past cases chosen by your team are traced in the product and compared with the lists your team built at the time.

Training and go-live

Infection preventionists, employee health, unit managers and analysts are trained on their own workflows before go-live.

Limitations

What it does not do

Worth knowing before you evaluate it.

  • Contact lists are only as complete as the location, assignment and schedule data you provide. Without a real-time location system, contacts are based on rooms, units and assignments, not proximity.
  • It does not decide who is exposed. It proposes contacts under rules your team sets, and infection preventionists make and record each decision.
  • It is not a laboratory system or an EHR, and it does not place isolation orders; it tracks the actions your staff take in those systems.
  • It does not submit reports to the health department or NHSN. Your staff review, approve and submit them through their own channels.
  • Visitors and contractors are traced only where your facility records their location, such as through a visitor management system you connect.
  • It does not provide clinical guidance on treatment or prophylaxis; follow-up actions are the ones your policies define.
  • Employee health workflows follow your policies and applicable employment law; the product records decisions but does not set work restriction criteria.
  • It is designed for US facilities and reporting requirements; public health reporting formats in other countries are not included.

Evaluation checklist

What to test in a demonstration or pilot

Questions worth putting to us, and to any other vendor you are considering.

  1. Trace a past case your team worked by hand and compare the contact lists
  2. Check that rooms and units from your ADT and staffing data line up correctly
  3. Have an infection preventionist work a case from positive result to closed follow-ups
  4. Confirm what unit managers and employee health can each see about the same exposure
  5. Build a sample outbreak and review the line list your health department would receive
  6. Review how organism rule changes are proposed, approved and recorded

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a real-time location system?

No. Contact lists can be built from admission and transfer data, staff schedules and patient assignments. A real-time location system, where you have one, adds proximity detail.

Does the product decide who was exposed?

No. It proposes contacts using rules your infection prevention team sets. Infection preventionists decide, and each decision is recorded with its reason.

How is staff health information protected?

Employee health works staff exposures in its own view. Infection preventionists see that follow-up happened, and unit managers see only whether a staff member is cleared to work.

Can it report to the health department for us?

It prepares line lists and summaries in the formats you agree. Your staff approve and submit them through their usual channels.

How is it priced?

As a subscription, usually measured by the number of facilities or licensed beds, with implementation charged separately. See Working with Moraph for what drives a quotation.

Is there an accessibility conformance report?

Ask for one through the procurement request form at /how-to-buy/request, naming the version you are evaluating.
